Caulking

Exciting? Not really.

Important? Yes, really.

Caulking is not the most riveting topic, nor is it very noticeable to the eye. However caulking is a pertinent portion of preservation (you like that?). Caulking seals the naturally occurring imperfections in a log. Chinking is what seals the logs to one another, caulking is what seals the logs to themselves. When logs go through their drying and shrinking process, they develop checks or cracks in the wood. These checks are prime locations for insects to come in. They also open the way to rot and moisture quickly. Any check over 1/4” needs to be caulked. We also caulk the butt joints where log ends meet.

We offer a variety of colors so your checks virtually disappear in the log and that ugly crack is no longer visible.

Keep in mind logs need to breathe and have an outlet for moisture as well. Checks that are less than 1/4” in width and are down facing are generally left open for this reason. It’s just as important to know what not to caulk.
